Getting off the sauce

For the debate over gas prices to go anywhere, we have to accept one important fact: Oil is a non-renewable resource. Once it’s gone, it's gone. That, more than anything, is what’s driving prices up.

According to a 1999 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) study, Canada’s economy ranks 28th out of 29 industrialized countries in terms of energy efficiency. That means to generate a dollar of GDP our economy needs to use more energy than just about every other industrial country.

So, as energy prices increase - and that includes gasoline - Canada will be hit harder than most everyone else. And our competitiveness will suffer.

This design is bugging me

Sadly I recently noticed how this design looks at 800x600. (Surely I tested that way back when!? Nope. Moment of foolishness...) Gotta get around to changing it. I guess I'll finally put the randomizer I'd originally intended in too.

Not enuf hours in the day.

So I got a comment from another Tzaddi. Cool. Never actually talked to another one before.

I'm glad I'm not a woodpecker

We were walking near the Langdale ferry the other day and heard "tap-tap-tap. tap-tap-tap." There was a woodpecker working on extracting dinner out of an old dead tree. He (?) was just SLAMMING his beak into the wood. Do you think they have special brain design to protect against that kind of impact? Or maybe they just don't have much of a brain to protect. There are so many weird things in nature.

Cost of war

Hmm, let's see. Would you prefer to build 1.6 million units of affordable housing, or give medical insurance to 48.9 million children, or bomb the hell out of Iraq? Compare the cost of the war in Iraq.

Oh, it's good to be handy

Kenton and I just finished building a new desk for me. Listen to my happy fingers tap-tap-tapping at this wonderful new desk. I have room for a new scanner now.... *grin*

In other news

I heard from two long lost colleagues this week that they read my site. So what do you know, I'm not just talking to myself. Guess I should update it more often then, eh? ;-)

Well, don't be afraid to throw a comment or two my way so I know you love me. Or maybe I have to start saying some really controversial stuff so I can at least get flamed...

GM and Super Organics

So I wonder if Monsanto's anouncement that it is abandoning it's Roundup Ready wheat, will have any bearing on the case against Percy Schmeiser... which I think isn't quite done yet. I don't know for sure; the last update to his site was in January when the Supreme Court started hearing the case.

Wired has an interesting article on "Super Organics". Basically it's supposed to combine the best of long established cross breeding techniques with lab techniques like cell cultures. So you can get better varieties quicker without the hocus pocus of moving genomes around. If it's really that clean, I say "sign me up".
